My ancestors originated from this sacred land, long before they were bound and enslaved for the plantations in the West Indies.
Today, I stand here taking in all the wild beauty of Kenya at Maasai Mara; a reserve in southwestern Kenya, close to the Tanzanian border. My eyes dreamily glaze over the endless grasslands filed with herds of wilder-beats. I am told to return for the seventh wonder of the world or the “Great Wildebeest Migration” in the summer when over two million of these majestic animals including zebras and gazelles cross the borders of Tanzania from the Serengeti into Kenya’s Maasai Mara, an event visible from space but for now, I am just in awe and wonderment.
My favorite animals were the giraffes, graceful and elegant. As the sun glistens on their lush skin, they gaze out into the horizon walking in straight lines like in fashion show. Totally fascinated as they blend through the Savanna and the orange African sunset.
As we move on with our Safari, I spot a few lions basking in the mid-day sun. The ginormous elephants gently pouncing through the cushioned grassland, they’re completely unbothered by our gawking presence and running truck engines. The hyenas giggle echos in the far distance, and the soaring birds grace the skies.
My deepest honor, to have seen vast Savanna’s with immense herds of wildlife; fully appreciating the flora and fauna of this beautiful land.
